Programs and Projects
Hawk Threads: Our present project for the past few years is contributing to the Corning-Painted Post Area Schools' "Hawk Threads" program for all C-PP students, Pre-K through Grade 12. it is an initiative started at Corning-Painted Post High School by staff members and the Building Leadership Team. It is an unused classroom at the school where students who are in need of clothing or toiletries can select items to take home at no cost to themselves. Gently used as well as new items of clothing, shoes, boots, backpacks as well as accessories (purses, scarves, belts, etc.) are displayed on racks. Toiletries such as shampoo, conditioner, deodorant, body sprays, soaps, perfume, cologne, toothbrushes and toothpaste are also available. The success of this initiative at C-PP High School has led to the expansion of the program to the Middle School and also to the six C-PP Elementary Schools.
Salvation Army Backpack Project: This has been an annual project for Gamma Zeta since 2009. In 2018, Gamma Zeta teamed with members of Beta Chi Chapter, Christ Episcopal Church of Corning, and First Presbyterian Church of Corning. Participants donate school supplies and/or money to purchase supplies and backpacks. Thanks to the generosity and support of the above named organizations, Gamma Zeta was able to hand checks totaling $1,000.00 to Corning Salvation Army Captains Francisco Rivera and Wanda Rivera to finance the Backpack Project . The donated school supplies were sorted and counted, and a list of supplies still needed was given to the Major. The Salvation Army used the donated money to purchase items on the list. Members met on August 22, 2018 and assembled 200 backpacks, 182 of which were distributed to 92 families later that week. Please see the "Gamma Zeta in the News" tab for additional information.
Student Teacher Scholarship: Each year Gamma Zeta awards a $500.00 scholarship to a female Student Teacher who will make a positive contribution to the field of teaching. Teachers in the Corning-Painted Post Area Schools are asked to nominate Student Teachers who are deserving of this award. The Scholarship Committee evaluates all nominee information submitted and chooses a Scholarship winner.
Schools for Africa: Gamma Zeta supports this program in conjunction with Delta Kappa Gamma International.
Aim for Seva: This is an education movement in India which supports education for impoverished children in rural areas. Gamma Zeta has supported this program with Chapter funds as well as member donations.
The Bright Red Bookshelf: This is a partnership project of the Family Reading Partnership and local human service agencies. Throughout the area, "Bright Red Bookshelves" are seen stocked with gently used children's books. Families can help themselves to the books and keep them or return them after they have been enjoyed. Gamma Zeta members collect and donate books to this project.
Hope for Ariang: Gabriel Bol Deng, one of the "Lost Boys of the Sudan," has been working to provide South Sudanese people with access to education, opportunities, and resources, with a special focus on women and children. We were privileged to have Gabriel speak to us at our South Central Area Conference on 10.01.16. Additional information regarding this project can be found by looking at the South Central Area Council tab, to the top left of this page.
Food Bank of the Southern Tier: Gamma Zeta members volunteer at the Food Bank of the Southern Tier at least once each year. Additional time is spent by individual members, as well. Many students in our area receive bags of food for weekend and vacation meals, when school breakfasts and lunches are not provided. Volunteers put together thousands of bags of nutritious, long-lasting foods that students can prepare for themselves, if necessary.
